Sursee is located at the northern end of Lake Sempach in the canton of Lucerne and is a major regional center with a rich history. The town was founded in the Middle Ages and possesses a splendid old town listed in the federal inventory of heritage sites of national importance. Striking buildings such as the late Gothic town hall and various burgher houses bear witness to the town's former prosperity as a trading center. Geographically, Sursee forms the center of the Surental valley and is an important transport hub between Basel and Lucerne. The economy is highly diversified, with industry, trade, and services playing an important role. Unique is the tradition of the Gansabhauet, which takes place every year on November 11th (St. Martin's Day) and attracts thousands of spectators. Participants try, blindfolded, to knock down a dead goose with a saber stroke. The demographics of Sursee show a dynamic development with steady population growth, attributed to the high quality of life and good infrastructure. Lake Sempach has numerous leisure opportunities, from water sports to relaxing walks along the shore. Furthermore, Sursee is firmly established as an educational location in the region and provides diverse cultural offerings in theaters and museums.
