The 'Golden Round Trip' (boat, cogwheel railway, cable car, bus) is the classic way to experience the mountain, but check the cogwheel railway's operating season (typically May-November). For a cheaper 'Silver Round Trip', a train replaces the boat.
To beat the crowds, take one of the first cable cars up from Kriens in the morning. The summit gets very busy by midday.
The cogwheel railway is incredibly steep. For the best views on the way up, try to get a seat facing downhill.
Wear sturdy shoes. Even if you only plan a short walk, the terrain at the summit is rocky and alpine. The path to the Tomlishorn peak is a relatively easy and rewarding walk with fantastic views.
Check the weather and live webcam at the valley station before buying your ticket. The weather can change quickly and there's no point paying the high price if the summit is in clouds.

If you stay overnight at the hotel on the summit, the observation deck is magical and completely peaceful at sunrise, long before the first cable cars arrive.

Mount Pilatus rises to 2,132 meters above Lake Lucerne, serving as the city's iconic landmark. Staying overnight to witness the sunset above the clouds is a highlight for many visitors. The 'Golden Round Trip' is the most popular way to explore: it combines a boat trip on Lake Lucerne from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel train ride, the descent by cableway to Kriens, and a bus trip back to Lucerne. The best time to visit is from May to October when the cogwheel railway is in operation. Its proximity to Lucerne makes it a handy day-trip destination.
