💡 Tips
- The 'Golden Round Trip' (boat, cogwheel railway, cable car, bus) is the classic way to experience the mountain, but check the cogwheel railway's operating season (typically May-November). For a cheaper 'Silver Round Trip', a train replaces the boat.
- To beat the crowds, take one of the first cable cars up from Kriens in the morning. The summit gets very busy by midday.
- The cogwheel railway is incredibly steep. For the best views on the way up, try to get a seat facing downhill.
- Wear sturdy shoes. Even if you only plan a short walk, the terrain at the summit is rocky and alpine. The path to the Tomlishorn peak is a relatively easy and rewarding walk with fantastic views.
- Check the weather and live webcam at the valley station before buying your ticket. The weather can change quickly and there's no point paying the high price if the summit is in clouds.
🍽 Food
A classic Swiss mountain dish. Enjoy it at one of the restaurants at the Pilatus-Kulm summit for a hearty meal with a view.
Some restaurants at the top offer fondue, providing a quintessential Swiss experience. It's often a shared meal, excellent for a group.
A Lucerne specialty pastry shell filled with veal and mushrooms in a creamy sauce. Find it in traditional restaurants in the city of Lucerne before or after your mountain trip.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
According to legend, Pilatus was home to dragons. You'll find countless dragon-themed souvenirs in the shop at the summit, from toys to trinkets.
Lucerne, at the foot of the mountain, is world-famous for its watch shops. Browse the stores in the old town to find an authentic Swiss timepiece.
A relatively flat and safe panoramic walk of about 45 minutes from the Pilatus-Kulm hotels to the highest point of the Pilatus massif. It has wide-open views away from the main terrace crowds.
A short, secured walk through rock galleries at the summit. While popular, it can offer moments of quiet contemplation of the rock formations and views.
If you stay overnight at the hotel on the summit, the observation deck is magical and completely peaceful at sunrise, long before the first cable cars arrive.
Water temperature…
Mount Pilatus rises to 2,132 meters above Lake Lucerne, serving as the city's iconic landmark. It is famously known as the 'Dragon Mountain' because medieval legends claimed dragons with healing powers lived in its crevices. The main attraction is the Pilatus Railway from Alpnachstad, which, with a maximum gradient of 48 percent, is the world's steepest cogwheel railway. Alternatively, a modern panorama gondola and the 'Dragon Ride' aerial cableway from Kriens provide scenic access to the summit. At the top, visitors are treated to a panorama of 73 Alpine peaks and numerous Swiss lakes. For active travelers, Fräkmüntegg middle station features Central Switzerland's largest rope park and a summer toboggan run. In winter, the mountain transforms into a paradise for snowshoe hikers and sledders. Pilatus Kulm houses two hotels and several restaurants serving local specialties like Älplermagronen. Staying overnight to witness the sunset above the clouds is a highlight for many visitors. The 'Golden Round Trip' is the most popular way to explore: it combines a boat trip on Lake Lucerne from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel train ride, the descent by cableway to Kriens, and a bus trip back to Lucerne. The best time to visit is from May to October when the cogwheel railway is in operation. Its proximity to Lucerne makes it a handy day-trip destination.
