Until the end of 2009, Littau was an independent political municipality in the Canton of Lucerne, merging with the city of Lucerne on January 1, 2010. The settlement history of the area can be traced back to 1173, when the locality first appeared as Litowa in the records of Muri Abbey. Geographically, the territory is bounded by the Reuss and Kleine Emme rivers, which historically favored the establishment of industry and trade. Particularly, the utilization of hydropower played a decisive role in economic development during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the merger, Littau became an important district of Lucerne, encompassing both dense residential quarters and extensive industrial zones. The former municipal territory nevertheless preserves its own cultural traditions and features a significant sacred monument in the St. Theodul parish church. Infrastructural connectivity to the center of Lucerne is highly developed through public transport and proximity to the A2 motorway.
