Glacier Garden Lucerne (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Glacier Garden in Lucerne is a unique natural monument and museum that was accidentally discovered in 1872 during excavation work for a wine cellar. The site features 32 massive glacial potholes formed during the last Ice Age, approximately 20,000 years ago, when Lucerne was buried under a vast sheet of ice. Beyond these ice-age relics, the museum provides fascinating insights into Earth's history, showcasing fossilized shells and palm leaves that prove the region was once a subtropical sea 20 million years ago. Another major highlight of the complex is the 'Alhambra Mirror Maze,' originally created for the 1896 National Exhibition in Geneva, which uses 90 mirrors to create disorienting optical illusions. Visitors can also climb an observation tower for panoramic views of Lucerne and the surrounding Alps. The Glacier Garden seamlessly blends natural science, geology, and history, and has recently been expanded with a spectacular subterranean rock world that leads deep into the mountainside.
