Horw is situated on a peninsula on the western shore of Lake Lucerne, south of the city of Lucerne. The municipality extends from the lakeshore up to the forested slopes of the Pilatus massif. Archaeological traces suggest that the area was settled as early as the Bronze Age. The first written mention dates back to 1231 under the name Horwe. Historically, Horw was a farming village closely linked to the St. Leodegar Monastery in Lucerne. With the construction of the Brünig railway and the general opening up of Central Switzerland in the 19th century, the town underwent a fundamental transformation. Today, Horw presents itself as a modern agglomeration municipality with a high proportion of service industries and educational institutions. Particularly noteworthy is the campus of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts for Technology and Architecture, which significantly shapes the town. The community provides an exceptional quality of life due to its location between the city and nature. The lakeshore with the Horw basin invites leisure activities, while the nearby mountains offer numerous hiking opportunities. Despite strong growth, Horw has maintained an independent character and fosters an active community life and local traditions.
