Gurye
Gurye is regarded as one of South Korea's most spiritual and pristine locations. Tucked away at the southern base of the majestic Jirisan National Park, it serves as the great gateway for hiking the country's second-highest peak. The town is home to Hwaeomsa, one of Korea's most significant Buddhist temples, featuring architectural masterpieces and stone pagodas designated as national treasures. The temple's serene atmosphere within the dense forest provides a profound meditative experience. A major highlight is the Sansuyu Festival in spring, when the Sandong village is blanketed in bright yellow blossoms. The cornelian cherries (Sansuyu) are the symbol of Gurye and are highly valued in traditional medicine. The scenic Seomjin River flows through the county, providing beautiful trails for cyclists and photographers. Nearby, the Nogudan peak features a spectacular 'sea of clouds' view that is a favorite among sunrise seekers. Local cuisine in Gurye is famous for Sanchae Bibimbap, made with fresh wild mountain herbs gathered from the surrounding slopes. The region is also known for producing high-quality traditional teas. The best time to visit is March for the Sansuyu blossoms or October for the dramatic autumn foliage in Jirisan. Gurye is easily accessible via KTX high-speed train or express bus from Seoul and other major cities.
