Namhae, the fifth-largest island in South Korea, is connected to the mainland by two majestic bridges. Known as 'Treasure Island,' its primary appeal lies in its pristine coastal beauty and unique cultural sites. A standout attraction is the German Village, built in the 2000s for Korean miners and nurses who returned from working in Germany in the 1960s. Today, it gives a slice of Europe with its red-tiled roofs, German architecture, and an annual Oktoberfest that draws thousands. One of the most photographed locations is Daraengi Village, where over 100 stone-stacked terraced rice paddies descend steeply toward the sea, showcasing traditional agricultural ingenuity. Perched high on Geumsan Mountain is the Boriam Hermitage, one of Korea's premier prayer sites, offering panoramic views of the countless islands in Hallyeosudo National Park. The island is also famous for its high-quality garlic and fresh anchovies. The coastal drives here are considered some of the most scenic in the country. The best time to visit is in spring (March-April) for the verdant rice terraces and cherry blossoms. Reachable by bus from major cities to Namhae Terminal, it is best explored by car to enjoy the winding coastal roads. Namhae provides a well-suited mix of exotic island nature, traditional farming culture, and unexpected international influences, making it a truly unique destination in Korea.
