The Turtle Ship, or Geobukseon, was a highly specialized armored warship of the Joseon Dynasty that achieved legendary status under Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the late 16th century. Its most distinctive feature was a curved roof covered with iron spikes, designed to prevent enemy boarding attempts and protect the crew from archers and musket fire. At the bow, a formidable dragon head served both as a psychological deterrent and a functional weapon mount for cannons or sulfur smoke emission. These vessels were instrumental in defeating Japanese naval forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598), providing the Korean navy with a tactical advantage through their superior durability and firepower. The ship's structure was built upon the sturdy Panokseon hull, modified with a fully enclosed deck to create one of the earliest examples of an ironclad warship. Modern replicas are displayed at significant historical sites, such as the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul and the naval base in Tongyeong, showcasing the innovative engineering and maritime heritage of the Joseon era.
