Jowhar is the capital of the Hirshabelle state and the Middle Shabelle region in southern Somalia. The city is located approximately 90 kilometers north of Mogadishu on the Shebelle River, which makes the region the most productive agricultural zone in the country. During the colonial period, the city was known by the Italian name Villaggio Duca degli Abruzzi and housed one of the largest sugar factories in Africa. Jowhar was a hub for the production of sugarcane, cotton, and citrus fruits. Due to its strategic location on the main road to the north, the city served several times as a temporary political center during unstable periods in the capital. The geography is flat and defined by the river's irrigation system, which is prone to embankment breaches during heavy rains. Today, Jowhar is an important administrative center and a hub for food transport to Mogadishu.
