Highlights of 2026

10

Set in the upper Dordogne valley on the border between Corrèze and Cantal, Bort-les-Orgues is instantly recognizable by the massive volcanic rock formations towering 350 meters above the town. Known as the Orgues de Bort, these striking phonolite columns were formed roughly 15 million years ago and provide spectacular panoramic views stretching to the Auvergne mountains from their summit. The town is equally defined by its colossal hydroelectric dam, the Barrage de Bort-les-Orgues, which holds back the waters of the Dordogne to create one of France's largest artificial lakes. The shores of this 21-kilometer-long lake, particularly around the enchanting Château de Val, a 15th-century fortress that now appears to float on the water, offer extensive opportunities for boating, swimming, and lakeside hiking. The contrast between raw volcanic geology and monumental modern engineering gives Bort-les-Orgues a dramatic, distinctive atmosphere well-suited for nature lovers and industrial history enthusiasts.
