The Monts Dore represent a magnificent volcanic massif located in the heart of the Auvergne region within France's Massif Central. This complex stratovolcano system was active between 3 million and 200,000 years ago, leaving behind a rugged landscape of high peaks and deep valleys. Its summit, Puy de Sancy, reaches 1,886 meters, making it the highest mountain in central France. The massif's topography was further refined by Quaternary glaciations, which carved out massive U-shaped valleys and amphitheater-like cirques, such as the Cirque de Chaudefour. The region is exceptionally rich in hydrological features, boasting numerous mineral and thermal springs that gave rise to famous spa towns like Le Mont-Dore and La Bourboule. It also features impressive volcanic lakes, including the deep, circular Lac Pavin, a classic example of a volcanic maar. As a core part of the Volcanoes of Auvergne Regional Natural Park, the Monts Dore offer a sanctuary for alpine wildlife like chamois and marmots and serve as a premier year-round destination for skiing, hiking, and mountaineering.
