Balcad Textile Factory (Somalia)

Weather…

The Balcad Textile Factory, widely known as Somalitex, was once the cornerstone of Somalia's light industry. Established in the 1960s with assistance from West Germany, the facility is strategically located near the Shabelle River to utilize its water resources and proximity to cotton-growing areas. During its peak operation, the factory employed thousands of workers and produced a diverse range of fabrics for both domestic consumption and international export. Its vertically integrated production cycle included the ginning, spinning, weaving, and finishing of cotton grown mainly in the Middle Shabelle region. Following decades of inactivity due to the civil war, there have been several proposals to rehabilitate the factory to revive the local textile industry. The remains of the plant serve as a reminder of Somalia's ambitious 20th-century industrialization efforts and the vital role of agriculture in supporting manufacturing.
