Jowhar subsequently became the hub of Somalia's sugar industry, featuring a modern refinery, an extensive narrow-gauge railway system, and sophisticated irrigation canals. By the 1970s, the plantation was one of the nation's largest employers, providing sugar for the entire domestic market and contributing to regional economic growth. Life on the plantation was defined by the intersection of factory labor and field cultivation, supporting thousands of families in surrounding worker villages. Although production halted during the civil strife of the 1990s, the remains of the industrial complex and the irrigation network continue to influence the local landscape.
