Mogadishu Stadium (Somalia)

Weather…

Mogadishu Stadium is the largest sports arena in Somalia and a significant architectural legacy of the 1970s. Completed in 1977 with the assistance of Chinese engineers, it originally had a seating capacity of approximately 35,000 spectators. The stadium was the venue for numerous international football matches, athletics competitions, and large-scale political rallies. Its functional design featured expansive seating areas and a prominent floodlighting system, making it one of the most advanced sports facilities in the region at the time. During the Somali Civil War, the stadium lost its sporting purpose and was converted into a strategic military base by various armed factions and later by international peacekeeping forces. The pitch and infrastructure suffered from military use and a lack of maintenance for decades. It was only in 2018 that the stadium was handed back to the Somali authorities, signaling the start of an extensive renovation phase. In June 2020, the stadium was officially reopened, an event celebrated nationwide as a symbol of peace and returning normalcy. Today, it once again serves as the home ground for the Somali national football team and hosts national league matches, representing the nation's resilience and passion for sports.
