Issoire is a historic town in the Puy-de-Dôme department, situated in the Limagne plain of the Auvergne region. Its most iconic landmark is the Abbey Church of Saint-Austremoine, one of the five major Romanesque churches of the Auvergne, renowned for its intricate mosaics made of volcanic stone and its vibrantly restored 19th-century interior. Historically, Issoire was a strategic prize during the Wars of Religion, which left a mark on its urban fabric. In the 20th century, the town transformed into an industrial powerhouse, specializing in aluminum processing and aerospace technology, hosting major players like Constellium. Beyond industry, Issoire is a hub for culture and nature, sitting at the doorstep of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. The town's spirited social life is best experienced during its massive Saturday morning market, where local produce from the Sancy mountains is sold. The medieval Clock Tower (Tour de l'Horloge) remains a key symbol of the town's civic identity and history.
