Le Mont-Dore is a renowned thermal spa and winter sports resort located in the heart of the Massif Central, within the Puy-de-Dôme department. The town sits at an altitude of 1,050 meters at the foot of Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in central France. Its healing thermal springs have been known since antiquity, with Roman ruins still visible today as a testament to its long bathing tradition. In the 19th century, the town flourished as a fashionable spa destination, which is reflected in the grand neo-Byzantine architecture of its thermal baths. By the 1930s, Le Mont-Dore became one of the first established ski resorts in France and remains a popular destination for mountain sports throughout the year. The surrounding area features spectacular hiking trails through volcanic craters and past impressive waterfalls like the Grande Cascade. In addition to its medical treatments, the town draws visitors with its Belle Époque charm and lively cultural scene. The combination of alpine nature and historic spa culture makes Le Mont-Dore a unique and vital destination in the Auvergne region.
