Tucked away in the fertile Weida river valley, this small town is historically regarded as the cradle of the Vogtland region. Rising prominently above the settlement is the Osterburg, a fortress whose imposing 33-meter-tall 12th-century keep (Bergfried) is visible from miles away. This stronghold was once the seat of the Reeves (Vögte) of Weida, who lent their title to the entire geographic area; it currently houses a regional museum and a 360-degree observation deck in the tower. An architectural testament to medieval scale is the Widenkirche. Though largely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, the soaring Gothic church ruins continue to captivate photographers and historians. Engineering enthusiasts frequently seek out the Oschütztal Viaduct. Completed in 1884, this single-track steel lattice railway bridge spans 185 meters across a deep valley and stands as a masterpiece of early industrial design. The historic core features winding alleys that climb the slope directly from the riverbanks. The former tanners' quarter, with its squat buildings, recalls a long tradition of leatherworking. Every first weekend in September, the medieval Cake Market (Kuchenmarkt) fills the old town with historical craftsmen and entertainers.
