Ronneburg, located in the Thuringian district of Greiz, is a prime example of impressive structural transformation and highly successful landscape revitalization. Once a major center for intensive Wismut uranium mining, the region has completely reinvented itself and is now known as the New Ronneburg Landscape (Neue Landschaft). For the 2007 Federal Horticultural Show, the former massive spoil tips were ingeniously transformed into a spectacular, expansive landscape park that today serves as a green oasis, inviting visitors to walk, cycle, and relax. Particularly striking is the Schmirchauer Höhe hill with its walkable discovery tower, offering a fascinating panoramic view over the renatured valley and the futuristic Dragon's Tail Bridge (Drachenschwanzbrücke), which happens to be one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe. Overlooking the historic town center is the imposing Ronneburg Castle, whose origins trace back to a medieval fortress, and which today houses engaging exhibitions on the town's eventful history. Anyone interested in geology, industrial mining heritage, and modern environmental restoration will find Ronneburg an immensely captivating destination to explore.
