Set within the Thuringian Vogtland, this dual town's character is heavily shaped by the nearby Zeulenroda Dam, affectionately known by locals as the Zeulenroda Sea (Zeulenrodaer Meer). The reservoir, flooded in 1973, creates a 227-hectare expanse of water that draws sailors, stand-up paddleboarders, and swimmers to its promenades during the summer. In the town center of Zeulenroda, the strict classicist 1827 town hall forms the architectural anchor of the market square; standing watch on its tower is a statue of Justice, locally referred to as "Themis". Historically, the settlement was a stronghold for hosiery knitting and furniture production, industries documented with original machinery and period room settings in the Municipal Museum located in the former courthouse. The Triebes district complements the urban landscape with red-brick industrial buildings left over from a massive historic jute spinning mill. Wrapping around the reservoir system is a 20-kilometer, well-maintained panoramic trail highly favored by hikers and cyclists. Situated right on the shore is a large tropical water park, bringing a maritime atmosphere to the forested low-mountain terrain even in the depths of winter.
