Berga-Wünschendorf is a newly established town in the Greiz district of Thuringia, founded on January 1, 2024, through the merger of Berga/Elster and Wünschendorf/Elster. Tucked away in the heart of the scenic Elster Valley, the town is surrounded by the rolling hills of the Vogtland highlands. Wünschendorf is recognized as one of the oldest settlements in the region, home to the St. Vitus Church (Veitskirche), a premier Romanesque landmark dating back to the 10th century. Berga is distinguished by its late-Baroque town hall and extensive network of hiking trails. A significant local attraction is the Wünschendorf Fairy Tale Forest, which has been a favorite destination for families for generations. The White Elster river provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, including canoeing and fishing. This administrative merger aims to enhance regional tourism and preserve the area's diverse historical legacy, which spans from medieval ecclesiastical sites to 19th-century industrial monuments.
