Henderson Field (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Henderson Field, now Honiara International Airport, was the pivot of the entire Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II. Originally under construction by Imperial Japanese forces as the Lunga Point airfield, it was captured by US Marines on August 7, 1942, shortly before its completion. The field was named in honor of Major Lofton Henderson, a US Marine aviator killed during the Battle of Midway. Its strategic value was immense, as it hosted the 'Cactus Air Force,' providing the Allies with air superiority that eventually crippled Japanese maritime supply lines (the Tokyo Express). For months, the airfield was the target of relentless naval bombardments and infantry assaults. Today, while it serves as the nation's primary international gateway, the site remains a solemn historical landmark with numerous memorials dedicated to those who fought and died on its grounds.
