The discovery of gold in this area dates back to Spanish expeditions in the 16th century, but modern mining operations only commenced in the 1990s. The Gold Ridge Mine was officially opened in 1998 but has faced multiple closures due to civil unrest and later due to extreme weather events. Geologically, it is an epithermal gold deposit associated with volcanic activity. The development of Gold Ridge has significantly influenced the economy of the Solomon Islands, while also being associated with environmental challenges and social conflicts regarding land rights.
