University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana (Slovenia)

Weather…

The University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana was established in 1810, making it Slovenia's oldest continuously operating scientific and educational institution. Its foundation dates back to the era of the Illyrian Provinces under French rule, with Marshal Marmont personally participating in the planting of the first linden tree. Under the leadership of its first director, Franc Hladnik, the garden became a vital center for the study of regional flora. On an area of approximately two hectares, the facility now houses over 4,500 plant species, including many rare and endemic taxa from the Alps and the Balkans. A major highlight is the large tropical glasshouse, opened in 2010 to commemorate the garden's 200th anniversary, which showcases a wide variety of exotic plants. The garden serves not only for academic research and teaching but also as a protected natural monument of national importance. Its location at the foot of Castle Hill provides a serene escape from the surrounding urban environment.
