Solkan Bridge (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Solkan Bridge over the Soča River near Nova Gorica is a masterpiece of engineering, holding the world record for the longest stone arch railway bridge. Built between 1900 and 1906, it was a crucial part of the Bohinj Railway line connecting the Austrian hinterland with the Adriatic port of Trieste. The main arch spans 85 meters and is constructed from exactly 4,533 precisely cut limestone blocks sourced from a local quarry. During World War I, in 1916, the bridge was destroyed by retreating Austrian forces to hinder the Italian advance, only to be faithfully reconstructed in the 1920s using the original plans. The bridge remains a significant monument to early 20th-century transport infrastructure and strategic planning. Its elegant silhouette integrates seamlessly with the emerald-green waters of the Soča, making it a prominent landmark for travelers and photographers alike.
