Otočec Castle (Slovenia)

Weather…

Otočec Castle is the only water castle in Slovenia, uniquely situated on a small island in the Krka River in the southeastern part of the country. The first written mention of the fortress dates back to 1252, when it functioned as a strategic fortification guarding a key river crossing. Originally built in the Gothic style, it was reinforced with defensive towers in the 16th century to repel Ottoman raids and later renovated into an elegant Renaissance residence. Throughout its history, it was held by various noble families, including the Villanders and the Marghieri de Comana. During World War II in 1942, the castle was set on fire and severely damaged, but it was faithfully restored during the 1950s. Today, it operates as a luxury five-star hotel and is surrounded by a beautiful English-style landscape park. Its memorable position amidst the emerald waters of the Krka makes it one of Slovenia's most romantic and photographed historical sites.
