Tršće is one of the highest settlements in the Gorski Kotar region, forming an administrative part of the town of Čabar in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Situated on a high plateau at an elevation of 824 meters, the village is surrounded by the dense forests and karst peaks of the Northern Highlands, including proximity to Risnjak National Park. The history of Tršće is deeply intertwined with the timber industry and forest management, dating back to the 17th century when the area was governed by the Zrinski and Frankopan noble families. Because of its significant altitude, the village experiences a harsh mountain climate with heavy snowfall, establishing it as a key destination for winter sports in Croatia; the Rudnik ski center is a long-standing local attraction for skiing and sledding. The village architecture is characteristic of the region, featuring steeply pitched roofs designed to shed snow and thick walls to provide insulation against the cold. Tršće serves as a hub for eco-tourism, offering numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking that reveal the area's rich biodiversity, including rare Alpine plants and large carnivores. The local community maintains strong cultural traditions, celebrated through folk music and a hearty cuisine centered on wild game, mushrooms, and berry-based preserves, reflecting the rugged yet bountiful nature of the Croatian mountains.
