Zahorska Lowland (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Záhorie Lowland (Záhorská nížina) is a geologically and scenically unique plain situated in the extreme west of Slovakia, neatly wedged between the Morava River bordering Austria to the west and the forested foothills of the Little Carpathians to the east. What makes this lowland radically different from other Slovak plains is the extensive presence of aeolian (wind-blown) sand dunes, deposited by intense winds at the end of the last Ice Age. Today, these nutrient-poor, dry sandy soils are covered by immense, unbroken tracts of Scots pine forests, giving the landscape an unexpected, almost Baltic or Scandinavian appearance. In stark ecological contrast, the floodplain along the Morava River is characterized by lush, regularly flooded riparian forests, oxbow lakes, and wet meadows that serve as an internationally recognized bird sanctuary. Historically functioning as a strategic borderland between kingdoms, the region retains a distinct cultural identity, complete with its own unique dialect and well-preserved folklore traditions.
