Šaštín Basilica (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šaštín is Slovakia's premier national pilgrimage site and a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture. Its construction began in 1736, commissioned by the Pauline Order and designed by architect Jean Baptiste Richepance, with the consecration taking place in 1762 in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. The basilica's most sacred object is a 1564 Pietà statue, which has drawn millions of pilgrims over the centuries seeking spiritual solace. The interior is renowned for its magnificent illusionistic frescoes by Jean Joseph Chamant and its grand Baroque altarpieces. In 1964, Pope Paul VI elevated the church to the status of a Basilica Minor, the first in Slovakia to receive this honor. As a central hub for Marian devotion, the basilica hosts the national pilgrimage every September 15th and serves as a major cultural and spiritual landmark in the Záhorie region.
