Szczawnica is picturesquely located at the border of the Pieniny and Beskid Mountains. The spa owes its name to the acidulous mineral waters, known as 'szczawy', which have been used since the 19th century to treat respiratory and digestive ailments. The town's architecture is characterized by the Swiss style, introduced by Józef Szalay. The biggest attraction is the traditional rafting through the Dunajec River Gorge, which starts in Sromowce Wyżne and ends in Szczawnica. Hikers appreciate the proximity to the Trzy Korony and Sokolica peaks, offering spectacular views of the Tatra Mountains. The town also features a modern chairlift to the Palenica summit. Culinary highlights include the local smoked sheep cheese 'Oscypek' and trout from the Dunajec River. Szczawnica is accessible by regional roads from Krakow in about two hours. The best time to visit is from May to October for hiking and in winter for skiing on Palenica.
