Sklabiňa Castle Ruins (Slovakia)

Weather…

Sklabiňa Castle ruins are located on a wooded hill in the northern Turiec Basin and served as the administrative seat of Turiec County for centuries. The first written mention of the fortress dates back to 1242, shortly after the Mongol invasion, when it was established as a royal castle to protect regional trade routes. In the 16th century, the Révay family acquired the estate and constructed a grand Renaissance manor house in the forecourt area, which functioned as their primary residence. During the Slovak National Uprising in 1944, the castle suffered a tragic fate when German troops burned it down in retaliation for supporting partisan forces. Today, the ruins of the medieval core and the remaining walls of the Renaissance palace are protected cultural monuments. Ongoing restoration efforts by volunteers have led to the opening of a small museum within the reconstructed premises of the castle's entrance gate.
