Blatnica Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Blatnica Castle stands on a narrow limestone ridge overlooking the Gader Valley in the Turiec region. It was built in the latter half of the 13th century, likely around 1252, to safeguard the 'Magna Via', an essential trade route connecting northern and southern Europe. Originally a royal fortress, it passed through various hands before the Révay family acquired it in 1540. The Révays expanded the site with Renaissance outer fortifications and utilized it as a provincial administrative center and residential seat. Despite suffering damages during the 17th-century Kuruc uprisings, the castle remained inhabited until the late 18th century. Once the nobility moved to more comfortable manor houses in the nearby villages, the fortress fell into neglect and eventual ruin. Today, the remains of the upper castle and its Renaissance bastions serve as a significant historical landmark within the Great Fatra National Park.
