Hodonín is a South Moravian town on the border with Slovakia, situated along the Morava river. The town is globally recognized as the birthplace of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, born here on March 7, 1850. The history of the settlement dates back to the 11th century when a border fortress stood on the site; Hodonín was granted town rights in 1228. The region is characterized by viticulture and the extraction of oil and natural gas, which gives the town its economic significance. A modern highlight is the local spa, Lázně Hodonín, which utilizes iodine-bromine water for therapeutic treatments. Landmarks include the Masaryk Museum, the Baroque castle, and the local zoo, which is regarded as one of the country's finest smaller zoological gardens. The flat surrounding landscape, known as 'Moravian Slovakia', is well-suited for extensive cycling trips through flood-plain forests and vineyards.
