Jánošíkove diery is a spectacular system of gorges and waterfalls located in the Rozsutce Nature Reserve within the Malá Fatra National Park. Named after the legendary Slovak national hero and outlaw Juraj Jánošík, who was born in the nearby village of Terchová, this area has one of the most exciting hiking experiences in Slovakia. The gorges were carved over millennia by the Dierový stream into limestone and dolomite rock, consisting of three main sections: Lower (Dolné), New (Nové), and Upper (Horné) Diery. The trail features over 20 waterfalls and is equipped with numerous iron ladders, chains, and wooden bridges that facilitate passage through the narrow rock crevices. The area is known for its cool microclimate, which supports a lush growth of mosses, ferns, and rare alpine plant species. Each year, more than 50,000 visitors are drawn to this natural wonder to enjoy its rugged beauty and the physical challenge of its vertical ascents. The route is particularly impressive after rainfall when the waterfalls are at their most powerful, creating a dramatic and primeval atmosphere.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
