Strečno Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Strečno Castle is perched on a steep limestone cliff overlooking the Váh River and the village of the same name in northern Slovakia. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, it served as a crucial border fortress guarding the toll station along the strategic trade route between the Turiec and Žilina regions. Throughout its history, it was held by Hungarian kings and prominent noble families like the Pongrácz. The most notable figure associated with the castle is Žofia Bosniaková, the wife of owner František Vesselényi, who was revered for her charity; her naturally mummified remains were found in the castle crypt in 1689. In the late 17th century, the castle was deliberately damaged by the forces of Emperor Leopold I to prevent its use by anti-Habsburg rebels. Currently, the partially reconstructed ruin is a major cultural site housing the Považie Museum's exhibits on archaeology and medieval fortification history.
