Bojnice Castle is one of the most visited and romantic castles in Central Europe, located on a travertine hill in the town of Bojnice. Originally built as a medieval stone fortress in the 11th century, the castle underwent a massive reconstruction under Count Ján Pálffy between 1889 and 1910, modeled after the French chateaux of the Loire Valley. This Neogothic transformation provided the castle with its iconic fairytale appearance, featuring slender towers and decorative pinnacles. The interior is lavishly decorated with fine art, historical furniture, and the famous 14th-century Bojnice Altar. A unique natural feature is the limestone cave located directly beneath the castle, connected to the 26-meter-deep courtyard well. The surrounding park is home to the 600-year-old King Matthias Lime Tree, one of the oldest trees in Slovakia. Today, the castle serves as a museum and is the site of popular cultural events, such as the International Festival of Ghosts and Monsters.
