Sivý Kameň Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

The ruins of Sivý Kameň Castle (Grey Stone) are located on a steep andesite cliff above the village of Podhradie in the Upper Nitra Valley. The castle was established in the 14th century, likely around 1352, as a royal fortress to manage the surrounding lands and protect the trade route along the Nitra River. In the 15th century, the site passed into the long-term ownership of the Majthényi noble family, who held and developed the castle for centuries. Throughout its history, the fortress was the site of several military engagements, particularly during Hussite raids and later during anti-Habsburg uprisings. In 1708, the castle was severely damaged by the troops of Francis II Rákóczi and shortly after was completely destroyed by imperial forces. Today, the surviving wall remnants are closely integrated into the volcanic rock landscape, providing insight into the medieval defensive architecture of the Prievidza region.
