Uhrovec Castle is one of the most remarkable and well-preserved castle ruins in Slovakia, hidden deep within the rugged terrain of the Strážov Mountains. Built in the 1260s as a defensive stronghold following the Mongol invasion, its remote location protected it from many of the conflicts that devastated other fortresses. This isolation allowed significant portions of its early Romanesque and Gothic architectural features to remain intact to this day. Throughout its history, it was held by powerful figures like Matthew Csák before becoming the long-term residence of the Zay family in the 16th century, who added Renaissance upgrades. Unlike many other Slovak castles, Uhrovec was never destroyed by enemy siege; instead, it fell into decay after a major fire in 1848 and the family's relocation to a more modern mansion in the village below. Today, the castle is being meticulously preserved by volunteer organizations, ensuring that its authentic medieval character is maintained for future generations. Its dramatic setting and architectural purity make it a quiet find of Slovak heritage.

Visiting
The ruins of Uhrovec Castle are among the best-preserved ruins in Slovakia and can be freely visited. Interiors are partially accessible; the courtyard and towers offer good insight.
Typical hours
As it's a free ruin, there are no set opening hours. Access is recommended during daylight and good weather, especially in summer months.
Photography
Photography is unrestricted throughout the site. The ruin is picturesquely located in the Strážov Mountains, offering excellent subjects for nature and architectural photography.
Time needed
Allow at least 1.5 hours for exploring the ruins and the climb. If you want to use the surrounding hiking trails, budget two to three hours.

Combine your visit with nearby Bánovce nad Bebravou. The manor in Uhrovec itself is also worth seeing and nearby.
Getting there
The ruin is reachable by car via the village of Uhrovec; parking at the foot of the castle hill. From there, a marked hiking trail leads up in about 20 minutes.
Insider tip
Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight, as some rooms may be dark. The ruin is less known, so you often have it almost to yourself.
