Anse Intendance (Seychelles)

Weather…

Anse Intendance is an impressive stretch of coastline located in the wild southern part of Mahé, the largest island in the Seychelles. Spanning nearly one kilometer, it is famous for its powder-white sand and deep azure waters. As there is no protective coral reef, the Indian Ocean swells hit the shore directly, resulting in powerful waves particularly during the southeast monsoon from May to September. The area remains largely undeveloped, with only one resort situated at the edge of the bay. The beach is a vital nesting ground for Hawksbill turtles, which lay their eggs here between October and February. Due to strong undercurrents, swimming is often hazardous, but the dramatic backdrop of granite boulders and dense tropical forest makes it a favorite for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Historically, this part of Mahé remained sparsely populated for centuries due to its rugged and inaccessible terrain.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This striking beach is easily reached by driving down a winding, scenic road located in southern Mahé. Additionally, local buses frequently serve the general area near the coastline, dropping passengers off within a very short walking distance.
📅
Best season
The powerful southeast trade winds blowing from May to September bring significantly larger waves, making it incredibly dramatic for viewing. Other months generally offer slightly calmer conditions, though it remains a wild environment year-round.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The wide, expansive sandy beach is relatively flat and easy to walk on. However, it is dramatically backed by dense, lush tropical vegetation and enormous granite boulders that perfectly define its wildly untamed and natural character.
🎒
What to bring
A good camera is an absolute must for capturing the dramatic, sweeping scenery. Otherwise, standard beachwear, incredibly strong sun protection, and a comfortable beach mat or towel are truly all you need for an afternoon here.
🅿️
Parking
There is typically a clearly designated and reliable parking area set just behind the natural tree line. This convenient spot provides a very short, direct, and shaded walk right onto the soft sand of the beach.
⚠️
Safety
Swimming is very often discouraged or requires extreme, heightened caution due to powerful, crashing waves, strong hidden undertows, and sudden drop-offs. Always respect red flag warnings and never turn your back on the unpredictable surf.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors choose to stay for roughly one to three hours. This provides ample time to genuinely admire the dramatic waves, walk peacefully along the extensive pristine shoreline, and photograph the spectacular natural surroundings.
