Vršac Tower (Serbia)

Weather…

Vršac Tower is a 15th-century medieval fortress perched on the summit of Vršac Hill at an altitude of 399 meters. It was constructed around 1439 by the Serbian Despot Đurađ Branković to secure the border following the Ottoman conquest of Smederevo. The original complex comprised a massive donjon, defensive walls, and smaller towers, with the 20-meter-high main tower remaining the most prominent feature today. The fortress features a wide view over the Pannonian Plain and the Banat region, highlighting its strategic importance throughout history. Over the centuries, control of the site shifted between Serbians, Hungarians, and Ottomans until it lost its military significance in the 18th century. Between 2009 and 2015, the monument underwent extensive restoration and was opened to the public, with the donjon now housing multi-level exhibition spaces detailing local history.
