Fenek Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

Fenek Monastery is located in the southern part of the Srem region, roughly 25 kilometers from Belgrade, near the village of Jakovo. Established in the second half of the 15th century, tradition credits its founding to the Branković dynasty, specifically Stefan and Angelina Branković. The monastery church is dedicated to Saint Paraskeva (Saint Petka), one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox world. Fenek holds a special place in Serbian national history as a key site during the early 19th-century uprisings against Ottoman rule; it was here that the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karađorđe, met with other prominent figures in 1813. The monastery suffered immense damage during both World Wars but has been meticulously restored in the subsequent decades. A notable feature of the complex is a sacred spring located beneath the church, believed by many to possess healing properties. Historically, the monastery served as a temporary resting place for the relics of Saint Paraskeva before they were moved to Belgrade. Today, Fenek is an active monastery that continues to be a major destination for pilgrims and history enthusiasts from across the country.
