Resava Cave (Serbia)

Weather…

Resava Cave (Resavska pećina) in Eastern Serbia is one of the most magnificent natural wonders in the Balkans. Although it is estimated to be around 80 million years old, it was only officially discovered by shepherds in 1962 and opened to the public in 1972. The cave system spans 4.5 kilometers in total, with a well-lit and safe tourist path covering about 800 meters. Visitors should be prepared for the internal climate, as the temperature remains a constant 7 degrees Celsius throughout the year, making warm clothing necessary even in summer. The cave is arranged across two levels and features eight major halls filled with an extraordinary variety of cave formations. From delicate stalactites to massive stalagmites and flowstones, the colors range from brilliant white and yellow to deep red, depending on the mineral content. Notable areas include the 'Hall of Statues' and the 'Crystal Hall', where pillars reaching several meters high create a cathedral-like atmosphere. Famous formations like 'The Family' and 'The Praying Nun' have become symbols of the cave's natural artistry. Located near the town of Despotovac, Resava Cave is often visited alongside the nearby Manasija Monastery, one of Serbia's finest fortified medieval sites, and the Lisine waterfall, one of the country's highest. The area is well-suited for a full-day exploration of Eastern Serbia's rugged karst landscape. The cave is open daily from April to October. Reaching the site is best done by car, and the surrounding forested hills offer a peaceful environment for those looking to escape the hustle of urban life.
