Water temperature…
Nova Estrela (East) refers to the easterly beach settlements of the Nova Estrela cooperative on the east coast of Príncipe Island. While the main village lies further inland, the coastal quarters serve as boatyard, fishing harbor and gathering place for the maritime community. Here, in open workshops, traditional pirogues are crafted from pau-ferro wood, a technique done without plans, solely by the masters' eye. The annual maritime processions in honor of São Pedro, patron saint of fishermen, are among the island's most colorful festivals: boats are decorated with colorful cloths and flowers and circle the bay in a flotilla. In the waters off Nova Estrela, spinner dolphins can be observed year-round, and humpback whales sometimes appear, making the place an emerging destination for gentle maritime tourism. Families open their homes for overnight stays and share fresh fish daily with guests.
