Santo Amaro is a bustling small town in the Lobata district on São Tomé's north coast, strategically located on the main EN-1 road connecting São Tomé city with the north. The settlement developed in the 19th century as a supply station for the surrounding roças and grew in the 20th century into a trade and craft hub thanks to its excellent road connections. Today Santo Amaro is best known for its carpentry and joinery workshops, which craft sturdy furniture and boat parts from tropical hardwoods like pau-ferro, quina and amoreira. On weekends, one of the liveliest markets in the north is held here, where farmers from Conde, Canavial and Boa Entrada sell their produce, bananas, passion fruit, avocados and yams. The small chapel of Saint Amaro, whose bell rings out across the fields on feast days, is the spiritual heart of the community. Travelers heading from the north to the inland will almost inevitably pass through Santo Amaro, gaining an authentic glimpse of everyday São Toméan life.
