Lake Muhazi (Rwanda)

Weather…

Lake Muhazi is a long, shallow lake in eastern Rwanda, stretching approximately 60 kilometers through a winding valley landscape. It was formed by the natural damming of a river valley, which explains its characteristic narrow and branched shape. The lake is situated in a region defined by rolling hills and intensive agricultural use, serving as a vital water source for livestock and irrigation. With an average depth of only five meters, the water is nutrient-rich and supports a significant fishing industry, particularly for tilapia. In recent decades, Muhazi has also developed into an important recreational area and tourism hub, with its shores being popular locations for weekend resorts near the capital, Kigali. Ecologically, the lake serves as a major resting site for numerous waterfowl and contributes to stabilizing the local microclimate. The shore vegetation consists mainly of reed beds and small papyrus stands, which function as natural filters for incoming surface water.
