The Birunga Mountains, an alternative spelling for Virunga, are a volcanic chain at the triple border of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These mountains are significant not only geologically, as part of the East African Rift, but also ecologically. They are home to the last remaining populations of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, a fact made world-famous by the work of Dian Fossey.
