Gahinga (Rwanda)

Weather…

Mount Gahinga is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains, located on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. At an elevation of 3,474 meters, it is the smallest of the eight primary volcanoes in the chain. The name Gahinga translates to 'small pile of stones' in the local language, a reference to the volcanic debris that farmers traditionally clear from their fields at the mountain's base. Geologically, it features a broad, shallow caldera at its summit, roughly 180 meters across, which contains a unique marshy ecosystem. The mountain is shared by Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Its lower slopes are characterized by thick bamboo forests, providing a crucial habitat for the endemic golden monkeys. Historically, the area was the ancestral homeland of the Batwa pygmies, whose culture is preserved through heritage trails on the mountain. The climb is considered moderate, offering a window into the rich biodiversity of the afro-montane forest.
