💡 Tips
- Book your gorilla trekking permits months in advance as they sell out extremely fast.
- Use local moto-taxis to get around, but always agree on the fare before hopping on.
- Layer your clothing for the mornings; it can be quite chilly in the mountains before the sun rises.
- Bring crisp US dollar bills printed after 2009, as older notes are often rejected at exchange bureaus.
- Visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund campus before your trek to gain valuable context on conservation.

Musanze, formerly known as Ruhengeri, is the fourth-largest city in Rwanda and serves as the premier tourism hub in the country's Northern Province. Set at the base of the Virunga Mountains, it is the primary gateway to Volcanoes National Park, world-famous as the sanctuary for rare mountain gorillas. At an elevation of 1,850 meters, the city enjoys a cool, misty climate that sustains a productive agricultural sector, particularly famous for Irish potatoes. Geologically, the area is noted for the Musanze Caves, a series of 2-kilometer-long lava tubes formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. In recent years, Musanze has seen rapid development, transforming into a bustling town with high-end eco-lodges and international research facilities like the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. It is also an important military and educational center, hosting the Rwanda Peace Academy and several specialized colleges.
