Huye, called Butare until 2006, is the undisputed intellectual and cultural center of Rwanda. The city is located in the south of the country and is home to the main campus of the University of Rwanda, founded in 1963. One of the most important sights is the Ethnographic Museum, a gift from Belgium for Rwanda's 25th anniversary of independence in 1987. It provides one of the best ethnological collections in Africa and deep insights into the country's culture and history. Huye is also known for its agricultural research, especially in coffee cultivation. The city has a quieter atmosphere than Kigali, with wide avenues and architecture that partly dates back to the colonial era. It was the colonial capital before independence.
