Nyamata Genocide Memorial

Nyamata Genocide Memorial is located in a former Catholic church in the Bugesera District, about 30 kilometers south of Kigali. During the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, thousands of people sought sanctuary within the church's walls, believing that religious sites would be respected. However, militias used grenades and tools to break in, massacring over 10,000 people inside the sanctuary alone. Today, the church stands as a somber memorial where the evidence of the violence remains visible, including bullet holes in the altar and the ceiling. The clothing of the victims is laid out across the pews, serving as a powerful and haunting reminder of the lives lost. Outside the building, massive underground tombs contain the remains of approximately 45,000 genocide victims. A visit to Nyamata is a deeply moving experience that educates visitors on the causes and consequences of the genocide while honoring the memory of those who perished.
