Nyamagabe, formerly Gikongoro, is a high-altitude town in southern Rwanda, situated at an elevation of nearly 2,000 meters. It serves as an important gateway to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's best-preserved mountain rainforests. The town itself is the administrative and commercial center of the district of the same name. The region's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of tea and coffee on the fertile slopes. Nyamagabe has a tragic history, as the Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre is located nearby, a former school where tens of thousands of people were killed in 1994. Today, the memorial is a poignant place of remembrance. The town's high altitude provides a cool climate and often provides spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, crisscrossed by deep valleys.
